How to Care for Your Winter Coat So It Lasts for Years
With the right care, a good coat lasts for many winters. These simple habits make a big difference.
Hang it properly
Use a wide, sturdy hanger that supports the shoulders. Thin wire hangers leave marks and stretch the fabric over time.
Brush, do not wash
Wool and tweed rarely need washing. Brush your coat gently with a clothes brush after wearing to remove dust and keep the fibres fresh. Always check the care label first.
Let it breathe
After a rainy day, let your coat dry at room temperature, away from the radiator. Direct heat can shrink or damage the fabric.
Treat stains quickly
Dab stains with a clean, damp cloth instead of rubbing. For bigger stains, take your coat to a professional cleaner.
Store it well in summer
Clean your coat before storing it, and keep it in a breathable garment bag. Add cedar blocks or lavender to protect it against moths.
